Sarah Anne loves lacrosse, and the MK Nightshade series that everyone was obsessed over in grade school. The problem is that she’s still obsessed, which is way too nerdy for a popular kid like her. So she hides her geekiness with a set of rules meant to keep her geek and jock selves separate.
Except when she’s offered a spot in a Nightshade fandom contest, where the winner gets to see the new movie premiere in LA. No one seems to think Sarah Anne can win, since she’s up against a pair of guys in high school–but the more she’s called a fake fan, the more determined she is to wipe the floor with her competition. As long as none of her friends or anyone at school knows what she’s doing.
Can she keep her geek identity a secret, win the contest, and manage to keep her friends even though she’s been living a lie? Sarah Anne is going to have to make some choices about what’s truly important to her and which rules she’s going to break to stay true to herself.
Hi, Erin! Thank you for coming on my blog and answering some of my questions!
Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog, Mari! I can’t wait to get to these questions…
Neither can I! First, where did you get the idea for Secrets of a Fangirl?
I really wanted to write about a character who had to hide something that she loved in order to stay with her friends, and once I started thinking about that I remembered that when I was a kid, I hid the fact that I was a huge Star Wars fan. People teased me about it because they said Star Wars wasn’t for girls. So once I settled on her fandom, the story came together.
Is Sarah Anne anything like you were in middle school?
All of my characters are a little bit like me, and a lot not like me. Like Sarah Anne, I wanted to stay with my friend group in middle school, and I sometimes made choices that went against what I truly believed in order to do so. Ultimately, I realized that if I couldn’t be myself with the people I was (supposedly) friends with, they probably weren’t great friends.
I think we’ve all been in that situation at least once! What three songs would Sarah Anne be totally obsessed with?
Ahhhh! I love this question. I think she’d play “Trampoline” by Shaed on constant repeat, because she’d love the lyrics and dreamy sound. She’d dance and sing to “ME!” by Taylor Swift as she goes through the events in the book, and I bet she’s a total Panic! at the Disco fan, so she’d be listening to “High Hopes” to hype up before her lacrosse games.
ME! has been on repeat in my apartment ever since it came out, so I definitely approve of that one. The cover for Secrets of a Fangirl is so fun! What are some of your favorite elements of it and do you feel it fits the story well?
I am so glad you like the cover! I literally squealed when I saw it. It’s perfect for the book. I love how it captures all of the elements of Sarah Anne’s life: her lacrosse world, her solidly popular self, and her love for the Nightshade Universe. Splitting it thirds was an awesome idea. I also really love the icons all around it. The dragon and the sword are my favorites. (And purple is my favorite color!)
What is one thing you hope readers take away from Sarah Anne’s story?
I hope readers root for Sarah Anne as she figures out who she is and what’s important to her. It’s hard to be who you are sometimes, but it’s truly the only way we can be happy with ourselves – and the best way to find the people who truly care about us.
Thank you again, Erin, for visiting with us and giving us an inside look into Sarah Anne and Secrets of a Fangirl!
