One of the worst reading slumps that has hit me in a while is currently happening. Depression has been a huge factor, and because of it my Netflix has been getting used a ton more. So, sorry if you only come here for the books, I’m going to take this opportunity to share eight of my favorite Netflix original series (and why you should binge them).
All credit for this one goes to Alexa from Writing the Universe for telling me how good this was. Alexa & Katie had been on my list for a while before I finally watched it. Once I started I couldn’t get enough and watched both seasons in three days. As the parent of a medically complex child, I loved that Alexa & Katie showed sides of sickness that doesn’t always get seen. Don’t think that this show is all doom and gloom though! Netflix provides some great humor, relatable content, and memorable characters.
Hilda is the most perfect little cinnamon roll. She is spunky, charming, full of life – and the entire show is the same. Netflix brought to life such a whimsical and fascinating world that will keep you hooked from the very first second. It was revealed at New York Comic Con that there will be a second season, but not until 2020. I’m really disappointed we have to wait so long but I know the wait will definitely be worth it.
I know absolutely nothing about the original She-Ra and honestly, if I hadn’t seen some of my Twitter friends talking about how great it was, I probably wouldn’t have watched this reboot. It was nothing like what I expected! I blew through the first season in a couple of days and the second season in just one afternoon. The female characters are so empowering and IT’S QUEER! Also, Mermista is my absolute favorite.
Something about me – I love murder documentaries. My husband and I watch them all the time. We binged this one in an entire weekend. The story is completely compelling and absolutely ridiculous. Is Steven Avery guilty of the murder of Teresa Halbach? Is he innocent? I. Don’t. Know. My opinion changes too often to keep track of it.
I was never interested in the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch television show. The fact that it was a comedy just seemed too hokey for me. When I saw Netflix was creating their own version that was dark and haunting, I was immediately ready for it. The day Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premiered I stayed awake until 3 in the morning, when it went live in my time zone, and didn’t stop watching until I had finished. Kiernan Shipka is the perfect Sabrina.
The Dragon Prince is not typically a show I would be interested in, but when I saw the trailer I was intrigued. I loved the animation style and the story looked fun. This ended up being so much more than I ever expected. Every single one of the characters is vibrant and striking and the story sucks you in. It also reminded me a ton of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and any show that does that gets a huge gold star.
I haven’t actually seen all of You, but I’m currently on episode four and completely hooked. This show is W I L D and actually really terrifying. It kind of makes me want to lock all of my social media accounts and never leave my apartment, but I can’t stop watching. It’s so well done. I have a feeling I know where it’s going and I can’t wait to find out if I’m right. Apparently it’s based on the book by Caroline Kepnes. I had never heard of it before, but I’m dying to read it now.
