Author Interview: Laurie Boyle Crompton

Today I have Laurie Boyle Crompton, author of Pretty in Punxsutawney, here to answer some questions! We’ll be talking about the 80s and what books she’s been reading lately. Stick around until the end because you’ll have a chance to win her book as part of a five book prize pack!

Hi, Laurie! Thanks so much for being here today and answering my questions. What is it about a Groundhog Day type story that appeals to you?

I loved the idea of giving a teen character a do-over on an important day. I wanted to make sure it had the most potential for fun and drama, and landed on Andie’s first day at her new school. Of course, knowing what’s coming next doesn’t always help Andie all that much! This book was a blast to write and served as my chance to explore all sorts of outcomes with a character who I love.

How many times did you watch Groundhog Day and Pretty in Pink while writing your novel?

Ha! Great question! I love movie watching as “research!” and I’ve viewed both of these movies so many times over the years! Pretty in Pink came out when I was a teen and I’m such a huge fan of Molly Ringwald that I dedicated Pretty in Punxsutawney to her! Jon Cryer is iconic as Duckie, and Andrew McCarthy was one of my teen crushes so Pretty in Pink has always been a favorite movie of mine. And Groundhog Day is such a great example of a full character arc! The way Phil grows less selfish throughout the film is portrayed so well and Bill Murray is just perfect. I don’t think another actor could’ve pulled off his loveable charm especially at the beginning when he’s basically a big jerk!

What is one thing you hope readers take away from Andie’s story?

I hope readers will see that our attitude effects our day in so many small ways that add up to big differences in the life we lead. We can’t control all of our circumstances, but we can approach them with a positive attitude which creates a brighter and more hopeful future. There’s a moment in the book when Andie wakes up and believes the sky seems less rosy, but since it’s literally the same exact day we know that it’s her perception of the light that has changed, not the actual light. The way we see the light makes all the difference!

What three songs would Andie be totally obsessed with?

Andie would be totally into the 80s classics! Of course, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper would be perfectly ironic for her. And since she was created from my brain she would definitely play the Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) on repeat. Finally (and obviously) Andie would be obsessed with the iconic song… Pretty in Pink by the Psychedelic Furs!

Have you read anything completely amazing lately?

I just started reading The Silence Between Us by Alison Gervais and I’m absolutely loving it! I also recently re-read SHOUT by Laurie Halse Anderson and was amazed by that book all over again. I was lucky enough to attend her launch party for SHOUT in lower Manhattan and Laurie is a true inspiration who walks in truth and light! Oh, and another fun, recent read was Ashley Longshore’s You Don’t Look Fat You Look Crazy. That cover alone makes me giggle!

Laurie Boyle Crompton is the YA author of the upcoming PRETTY IN PUNXSUTAWNEY (Blink/HarperCollins 2019) as well as ADRENALINE CRUSH (Macmillan/2014, Square Fish/2016), BLAZE (or Love in the Time of Supervillains), THE REAL PROM QUEENS OF WESTFIELD HIGH and LOVE AND VANDALISM (Sourcebooks/2013, 2014, 2017). Growing up in ‘Pennsyltucky’ in the 1980s, Laurie couldn’t wait to escape rural life. After saving up her tips from waitressing at a local greasy spoon at 18 she packed up her acid wash jeans and moved to NY. Where everyone else had stopped wearing acid wash.

She graduated first in her class from St. John’s University with a BA in English and Journalism. Since then she’s written for national magazines like ALLURE, survived a teaching stint at an all-boy high school, and appeared on Good Day New York several times as a Toy Expert. And yes, ‘toy expert’ is an actual profession. Really.

She has lived in places like Orlando, Florida where she and her husband spent all of their spare time and money visiting theme parks before moving to the Cotswolds in England for six months, which was every bit as cool as that sounds. The Cromptons are now back in New York where their two children resent never going to Disney.

Laurie occasionally enjoys hanging out in fields of blooming flowers and also refering to herself in the third person.

A Groundhog Day meets Pretty in Pink mashup from author Laurie Boyle Crompton, Pretty in Punxsutawney tells the tale of a girl willing to look beneath the surface to see people for who they really are.

Andie is the type of girl who always comes up with the perfect thing to say…after it’s too late to say it. She’s addicted to romance movies—okay, all movies—but has yet to experience her first kiss. After a move to Punxsutawney, PA, for her senior year, she gets caught in an endless loop of her first day at her new school, reliving those 24 hours again and again.

Convinced the curse will be broken when she meets her true love, Andie embarks on a mission: infiltrating the various cliques to find the one boy who can break the spell. What she discovers along the way is that people who seem completely different can often share the very same hopes, dreams, and hang-ups. And that even a day that has been lived over and over can be filled with unexpected connections and plenty of happy endings.
