The Sunshine Blogger Award

What is the Sunshine Blogger Award?

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to those who are creative, positive and inspiring while spreading sunshine to the blogging community.

How does it work?

  • Thank the blogger(s) who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the 11 questions sent by the person who nominated you.
  • Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
  • List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

A huge thank you to Dana from Devour Books with Dana for giving me this award! I’m so thankful to have met you through blogging!

What is one book you would make everyone read if you could, that is NOT a classic?

Absolutely 100% Deposing Nathan by Zack Smedley. This book has the ability to help so many teens navigate life and understand that who they are is okay. I was 25 when I read it and it even helped me realize that.

What is your favorite season and why?

AUTUMN! Give me all the pumpkin flavored things, cool rainy weather, and crunchy leaves!

Where do you prefer to buy your books from?

Honestly, just wherever I can get them. Preferably not Amazon because I like to support brick and mortar stores (and let’s be real I have zero patience) but other than that I don’t care.

There is a really nice indie in the next town over but it’s really hard to get to so I don’t often get to support them. We’re supposed to be getting a new indie soon that will be easier to get to and is going to focus on children’s and young adult books so they’ll most likely become my go to.

Do you lend people your books?

It’s incredibly rare that I let anybody borrow my books. The last time I did it was Uglies by Scott Westerfeld and I let my brother’s girlfriend borrow it. I literally had a serious discussion beforehand though because my copy is incredibly important to me and I’d probably stop speaking to anybody that lost it. She’s awesome though and returned it safely to me because she ended up buying her own copy since she’s enjoying it so much!

Do you have a favorite Disney movie and if so, what is it?

ALL OF THEM! (Just kidding! Kind of…) Umm, okay, here are the ones that come to mind first – High School Musical, Camp Rock, The Princess Diaries, Zootopia, Frozen, The Lion King (original), Aladdin (original), Oliver and Company, Tarzan, Inside Out and Cars.

In short – I can’t wait for Disney+.

What is a scent that always brings back a good memory?

Okay this is super specific and a little hard to explain but here goes…

There’s this very particular smell combination of humidity, sunscreen, the ocean, chlorine, and birds that reminds me of Florida. (And before you’re like uh birds wtf? my grandma breeds them so that’s where they come into play.) For some reason there are super random times that I’ll step outside in landlocked Oklahoma and smell a combination of all these things and it instantly transports me to Florida.

If you had to run a blog about something that wasnโ€™t books, what would it be?

I actually started blogging in 2018 about what it’s like to be a parent to a chronically ill child when I had some things I needed to get off my chest. I only ended up making about seven posts on it but it was a really great outlet and I like knowing that it’s there in case I ever need it again. My posts over there are pretty personal and if you ever want an inside look at how I felt when we thought Elliott wouldn’t make it then you can find the blog, Hearts for Elliott, here.

What is one fact about you that people donโ€™t normally know?

I’ve been sitting here for about ten minutes and can literally think of nothing to answer with. I pride myself on being an open book and as honest as possible about everything. If there’s anything about me you want to know then ask away down in the comments!

Okay, I finally thought of something. My cat, Noodle, is growing and starting to lose her baby teeth. I’ve been lucky enough to find three of them and instead of throwing them away I keep them. If I’m ever lucky enough to find any of the whiskers she said I’ll likely keep them as well.

If you could meet one author, who would you meet?

If I could meet somebody that has already died then I’d choose Charlotte Bronte so she could officially tell me that yes Jane Eyre is in fact queer.

If I went with somebody that is still alive then it would definitely have to be Zack Smedley. I really hope we’re able to meet in person some day because he’s become such a good friend.

Who is a person you admire and why?

My son, Elliott. The kid is two-years-old and has had seven heart surgeries, eight heart procedures, two general surgeries, and one eye surgery. And not once has he let any of it break his spirit. How could I not admire him?

Where is one place in the world you hope to visit?

It’s hard to decide between Netherlands and Belgium. I’d just love to explore that entire area with a little bit of Germany as well.

I nominate…

I know some of you have already been nominated/tagged so there’s no pressure to do it again! I just wanted you to know I thought of you. โค

My questions…

  1. If you could throw your birthday party anywhere, where would you choose?
  2. Do you collect different editions of the same book? Why or why not?
  3. What trope makes you instantly roll your eyes?
  4. What trope can you never get enough of?
  5. Last show you binge watched?
  6. Be honest – do you sneak snacks into the movie theater?
  7. You can only wear one color for the rest of your life – what color do you hope it is?
  8. Quick! You got into Disneyland five minutes early – which character do you rush to meet before the lines get ridiculously long?
  9. What book do you hope to see adapted for the screen in your lifetime?
  10. What is your favorite blog post that you’ve written so far?
  11. Whose book opinions do you always trust?

Want to answer my questions but I didn’t tag you? WHO CARES! Do it anyway and tag me in your post so I can come see your answers! Or, if you don’t want to make a whole blog post about it, let me know what your answers are in the comments down below!

  1. I loved reading this post so much, Mari! (And thank you so much for nominating me ๐Ÿ˜ญโค)
You are a hundred percent the reason why Deposing Nathan is on my TBR! From the way the author and you talk about it, I’ll love it to bits. I hope I can get to it some time in the next two months!
Elliott is definitely an inspiration for me as well. Your tweets about him are truly so empowering. I can’t imagine having to go through so many complications at such a young age, but I’m so proud of him for coming out stronger on the other end! And it definitely inspires me to push through in my endeavors as well, because if he can do it, why can’t I?
And Noodle is so cute, by the way!

    1. Of course! You deserve it! (I know you’ve been nominated before so seriously no pressure to complete it again.)

AAAAH! I love that I’m the reason Deposing Nathan is on your TBR! I hope you’re able to read it soon but don’t rush it. It’s a pretty heavy story so you definitely have to be in the right mindset for it.

I’m so glad that you’ve been able to find inspiration in Elliott. He’s a pretty amazing kid. I don’t know how he manages to keep such high spirits with everything he goes through but I’m so thankful he does.

THANK YOU! I wanted a cat for years and was finally able to adopt one earlier in the year. She can be real crazy at times but she’s perfect.
